Loreto Convent Msongari - Design Thinking Workshop

There were a total of 42 students who participated in the program. Participants comprised of Form Three, Physics students only.

After going through the course material, participants were then divided into 6 teams to work on various projects to create low cost solutions to challenges in their community. Topics included:

  1. Road Safety

  2. Light

  3. Waste

  4. IT

  5. Water

  6. Health

At the end of the session, a panel of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and alumni of the school were invited to talk to the students and advice them on university choices and possible future career options.


PROJECTS

ROAD SAFETY

The Speed CAM

To solve the problem of road accidents caused by reckless driving and speeding by incorporating into a speed gun, a camera and a light. When one is caught over-speeding, this triggers the camera to take a photo of the driver and the image is immediately sent to the police.

This will technology will discourage drivers from breaking traffic laws and hence ensure safety on Kenyan roads.

LIGHT

Bio-Battery

To create a 'bio-battery' which solves the problem of a lack of well defined lighting systems by using alternative sources of energy. The bio-battery utilizes a sucrose solution as the electrolyte to make a modified battery.

WASTE

Robo-Collect

To create a robot that is designed to collect litter and categorize the waste in internal chambers for recycling. This is to solve the excessive amount of litter during various events.

IT

The Garage Cage App

A mobile app used to provide information to the public on trash collection. Provides a database for garbage collectors and users are able to schedule a pick-up with an available collector.

WATER

Water Recycling System

To recycle water to improve conservation, prevent water pollution and contamination and creating public awareness. Water in a home is fed into a purification system and utilized for different uses.

HEALTH

Medical Watch/ Choker

This pregnancy test, comes in the form of a watch for women and medical chocker for teens. The watch uses receptors to measure blood sugar and pressure. It also notifies the user when the due date is approaching. This helps women who are unable to attend regular medical check ups.
